Beautiful and eye-opening. I have toured the site and had no idea that the Allies bombed it.

Pompeii is second in my interests, behind Egypt, of course. Amazing to walk the streets so rich in history. I very much agree with your ending conclusion, about what matters with the casts that hold so much fascination. Both interesting and disturbing, carrying both repulsion and fascination.

I've spent a day in Pompeii and would love to visit again--the ancient paintings are what I love most. Your photos are gorgeous.

Thank you so much! I was so bummed to miss some of them. I guess I'll have to make an effort to go back...I would love to visit Herculaneum, too!

I admire how you bring us (readers) along with you as if we are there in the physical space, walking down a path, and also traveling through time with you. It seems effortless when you’ve invisibly filtered so much information to give us the best bits, to make a story of it, and then connect it to you, now.

That ending is very moving-- I’d love to hear more about your mother if you find the opportunity. I hope the remembering is comforting too.

Thank you so much, Victoria! Part of my inspiration in writing is to make family and friends feel like they were along with me: being enchanted, making discoveries...so I really appreciate you saying that! :)

Even knowing how much destruction occurred in England and all over Europe - I was somehow still shocked by that.
