In which I spend a month in the city atop a cliff in the green heart of Italy, experience All Saints' and All Souls' Day, and get snubbed by local cats.
This was a gorgeous read. I was already excited for my trip to Italy next week, but your writing sent me over the edge. Our day trip to Orvieto was already planned for All Saints' Day. Should I reconsider? Is transportation and the funicular mostly unaffected? Will we still find enough places open to eat/shop/explore? We love off the beaten path. Would love to know your thoughts though - before we commit.
Thank you so much, Caitlin...and thank you for subscribing!
I think a day trip to Orvieto will be fine for All Saints' Day...in fact, I think it will be perfect! The cathedral will for sure be open, although there may be a few times it may be closed for mass...but you should be able to work around them pretty easily. The funicular shouldn't be affected at all, and I think most restaurants and bakeries will be open (and may have some specialities!). If you were planning on visiting a particular museum or attraction (like the underground tour), you might just check the website just in case. But I think most of the charm of Orvieto (besides the cathedral) is the location and the views and the charming walks...so I think you'll be just fine! I assume you're day-tripping from either Rome or Florence? Either way, public transportation should be running on schedule.
This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experience. We're day-tripping from Rome, and can't wait to explore all the charm of this village. Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks again!
Beautiful description and photos. I love that they don't have any people in them and it's like you had the place to yourself, apart from the three cats 🐈😺
I love how many tones and moods you fit into these vignettes— from funny to thoughtful to rapturous. The awestruck ending is perfect, and well earned. Your writing too is beautiful!

Thank you!! That's the beauty of early mornings and the off-season!
